Even before the 'Shades of white' theme at Sonam Kapoor's mehendi function last week, we have been on a lookout for interesting ways to wear white. Our (and the celebrities') pick - a white saree! Yes, white is a high maintenance colour but there's a reason why all celebrities are crushing on it everywhere. Apart from being so easy to pull off, it also reflects heat which makes it the coolest and most summer-friendly colour ever!
Here are 10 Bollywood celebrities and their 10 personal styles of saree draping that are on our radar for the next function we attend. Saree ke fall sa, kabhi match kiya re... Kiya kya?
Whether you're going to meet the parents of your boyfriend or the Prime Minister, take a cue from Queen K and drape a simple chiffon saree to look your "sanskaari" best. Nothing beats the elegance of a white saree whatever occasion you pick it for.
It's always a pleasure to see Sara Ali Khan in Indian outfits. The 24-year-old actress-to-be has a knack for whites we have seen. In a saree by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, we love the mirror work along the border and blouse. Revamp an old saree by adding embellishments to the border and make it as good as new without spending a bomb.
When it comes to sarees, Shilpa Shetty's gram makes for one helluva inspiration board. Whatever western wear trend there is, you'll see it on a saree, courtesy Shilpa Shetty (and her star stylist Sanjana Batra). In an Arpita Mehta couture, who you know is famous for her work with floral motifs, this ruffled saree will be perfect for a summer wedding.
After the naked dress, make way for naked saree. Sonakshi's sheer saree with all over embellishments is what I'm wearing to the next wedding I attend (if my mom allows me!). Doesn't she look as if wrapped in pearls? This Manish Malhotra saree is all the glam a modern woman needs to look her stylish best.
Look at Deepika Padukone giving all kinds of #BossLady feels in this Anamika Khanna creation. Styled by Shaleena Nathani for the TIME 100 Most Influential, the embroidery on this saree is so life-like, you won't notice it's white that she's wearing. Have you ever seen a more dramatic saree before?
Speaking of embroidery, Jacqueline Fernandez and her pearl embellished "self-sparkle" saree were the two things that lit the venue. Custom designed by Manish Malhotra for Sonam's wedding reception party, this is what Cinderella must look like if her fairy godmother were India.
Mahira Khan, or better known as "Zaalima", is often seen wearing sarees. We like the idea of having a satin-all-the-way saree, although I do have second thoughts about me in one as I would slip a lot. Nonetheless, you're just a bunch of safety pins away from looking like a celeb this wedding season.
After cotton, linen is the most summer-friendly fabric for its absorbent nature. Valued for their exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather, more and more clothes with linen in their fabric composition are coming in the market. That's why this saree from The Linen Club was love at first sight for us. This would make a great gift for mommy dear too.
As a kid, I was crazy about everything colourful. And now, I'm a complete opposite. You could say my wardrobe transition has been like Karisma Kapoor's - an overdose of colour in the 90's to today's monochrome. Add a bold border to your plain sarees and we promise you will look anything but basic. Thanks, Manish Malhotra, for the easy saree tip.
Now here's a saree my mother would approve of - with no skin show at all. In a Tarun Tahiliani couture, Tamannaah Bhatia's saree look is the playbook to nail the 'lady of the hour' look. Whether you're going to work or to a fancy dinner party, try a slim well-pleated pallu drape next time.
